There are more than 7,000 different flavors of vape juice available to users, which are often mixed together to create unique and delicious combinations. Unfortunately, many of these flavors contain chemicals that are considered safe in food products but may be harmful when inhaled in aerosol form. These chemicals can affect the health of users in a variety of ways, including increasing their risk for lung diseases and other conditions.
To identify these chemicals, we scraped e-liquid product information (including ingredients) from five national online vape shops. We identified 219 flavourings, of which 17 were added to more than 100 e-liquids (see online supplementary table S1). The five most frequent flavourings are b-damascone and vanillin for tobacco; eucalyptol and peppermint oil for menthol/mint; cinnamaldehyde for other sweets/desserts; and orange oil for fruit/other. Using these chemical features, we used an RF model to predict the category of a marketed e-liquid. RF prediction accuracy was 66%. This approach may be useful in developing regulatory strategies to reduce the appeal of e-liquid flavours for vulnerable users.
E-cigarettes are a new nicotine or tobacco product that allows users to inhale vaporized liquid solutions instead of smoke. Many of these products are flavored, which increases their appeal to youth and non-smokers. Several studies have shown that flavors are a key factor in the initiation of and escalation of use of e-cigarettes by adolescents and young adults. This has led to some local and state efforts to restrict e-cigarette flavors, such as in Chicago and San Francisco.
However, these restrictions may not fully address the issues that are driving e-cigarette flavor use among youth and young adults. A recent study, for example, found that the majority of e-cigarette users who reported using a fruit or candy-flavored e-cig in the past month switched to other flavors following the enactment of the Chicago and San Francisco ordinances. This is especially true for users of tank system e-cigs, who were more likely to switch to mint and menthol-flavored e-cigarettes.
A major feature that sets premium e-liquid flavors apart is their unique mix of flavor combinations. Premium brands do not simply combine fruit and menthol or coffee and tobacco; they experiment with unique blends that are not available elsewhere. For example, Five Pawns’ Black Flag Risen combines rich tobacco flavors with vanilla, cocoa, and walnut for a truly one-of-a-kind vaping experience.
Fruity flavored e-liquids are also popular and available in a wide range of options from different manufacturers. For example, Liquid State Vapors’ Apple Butter is a highly-rated blend of sweet Washington apples and spiced cinnamon. Similarly, Dinner Lady’s Lemon Tart is a sharp lemon curd with gooey meringue in a thin pastry crust.
Other popular e-liquid flavors include desserts and drinks. Moo E-Liquids’s Coffee Milk is a creamy rendition of your favorite brewed coffee with just the right amount of sweetness. Cuttwood’s Unicorn Milk is another popular strawberry and cream flavored e-liquid. Lastly, Air Factory’s Mystery Juice is an exciting mystery juice that reveals a new candy flavor with every hit.
The e-cigarette industry is developing rapidly, with many manufacturers offering different device configurations and products to expand their consumer base. Some manufacturers also offer customized vaporizing liquid flavors to appeal to specific customer tastes and preferences.
The variety of flavour descriptions used in marketed e-liquids may increase the attractiveness of electronic cigarettes and stimulate use among vulnerable groups such as non-smoking adolescents. It is therefore important to monitor and regulate these flavours. This paper presents a systematic overview of e-liquid flavour descriptions that were reported to be marketed in the Netherlands in 2017.
Our analysis shows that 169 e-liquids cannot be classified into one of the 15 main categories of the flavour wheel based on their flavour-related information from the manufacturers (based on brand name and flavour description). These e-liquids were labeled as other flavours, such as flower- and plant-related flavours (hibiscus, rose, jasmine, lavender); bread- and jam-related flavours; vegetables (cucumber); and tobacco-related flavours. 7000+ Puffs disposable vape pods are pocket friendly and last up to a week for chain vapers.
